The A Circuit

by Catherine Hapka, Georgina Bloomberg

After dark in a Mexican border town, a father holds open a hole in a wire fence as his wife and two small boys crawl through.
So begins life in the United States for many people every day. And so begins this collection of twelve autobiographical stories by Santa Clara University professor Francisco Jiménez, who at the age of four illegally crossed the border with his family in 1947.
"The Circuit," the story of young Panchito and his trumpet, is one of the most widely anthologized stories in Chicano literature. At long last, Jiménez offers more about the wise, sensitive little boy who has grown into a role model for subsequent generations of immigrants.
These independent but intertwined stories follow the family through their circuit, from picking cotton and strawberries to topping carrots--and back agai--over a number of years. As it moves from one labor camp to the next, the little family of four grows into ten. Impermanence and poverty define their lives. But with faith, hope, and back-breaking work, the family endures.

"A jewel of a book"--Rolando Hinojosa-Smith

"These stories are so realistic they choke the heart."--Rudolfo Anaya

Brooke brings her pony to summer camp in this second book in a contemporary middle grade series in the tradition of Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague.

Brooke Rhodes is excited to go to sleepaway riding camp for two weeks with her Chincoteague pony, Foxy. However, camp doesn’t turn out to be quite as fun as Brooke expected. The other girls all know each other already, and they don’t seem interested in bringing a newbie into their group. Besides that, they’re all riding tall, fancy, super well-trained show horses—not scruffy young Chincoteague ponies. Then Brooke overhears that this might be the last summer for the camp. She asks for help from her online Pony Post friends—Maddie Martinez, Hayley Duncan, and Nina Peralt—but she still has to wonder: will everyone work together to save the camp, or will this summer be their last hurrah?

Snowman: The True Story of a Champion

by Catherine Hapka

A twist of fate brings a man and horse together in this remarkable true story now available in a new version adapted by the author of the Marguerite Henry’s Ponies of Chincoteague series.

Snowman, an Amish plow horse, was bound for the meat market when Harry deLeyer, a Long Island riding instructor, spotted him at auction. After making eye contact with the gentle giant deLeyer decided to purchase him for $80.

At first, Snowman was just a horse that children rode during lessons, but when deLeyer sold him to a neighbor, the horse had other ideas. He would jump the high fences so he could return “home.” Harry then began training Snowman as a show jumper. Less than two years out of the plow fields, Snowman won the 1958 horse show jumping Triple Crown—the American Horse Shows Association Horse of the Year, Professional Horseman’s Association Champion, and Champion of Madison Square Garden’s Diamond Jubilee.

Snowman was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 1992.
