Selected Tales (Penguin Classics)

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Brothers Grimm

Selected Tales contains some of the most timeless and enchanting folk and fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, translated with an introduction by David Luke

These folktales collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are among the most memorable stories in European culture - conjuring up a world of spells and bewitchment, outwitted villains and cruel stepmothers, animal bridegrooms and enchanted princesses. Tales such as 'Hansel and Gretel', 'Little Red Cape' and 'The Robber Bridegroom' depict the dangers lurking in dark forests, and others, including 'Briar-Rose' and 'Snow White' show young beauties punished by unforgiving sorceresses. Other tales include 'Thickasathumb', which portrays a childless young couple whose wish for a baby is granted in an unexpected way, while 'The Frog King' tells of a rash promise made by a haughty princess to share her bed with a frog, and a fortune is won in 'The Blue Lamp', when a soldier gains a kingdom with the help of a magic lamp. David Luke's vibrant translation is accompanied by an introduction discussing the key themes of the tales and the literary background of the Brothers Grimm.

Back in Print!
Originally published as a two-volume set forty years ago, The Juniper Tree is distinguished first by the selection of stories. In addition, Segal and Jarrell bring to their renderings of Grimm the grace and precision that are characteristic of their own original prose.

Grimms' Tales for Young and Old: The Complete Stories

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Brothers Grimm

For readers of all ages, two hundred and ten tales of the Brothers Grimm, including "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Snow White," and "Hansel and Gretel," translated by Ralph Manheim, the highly acclaimed and prize-winning translator. Manheim has rediscovered in the original German Grimms’ editions of the tales the unadorned, direct rhythm of the oral form in which they were first recorded. He has retained their ageless magic and mythology and restored the extraordinary vitality and wit, the acute perceptions of human strength and facility mirrored in the facets of these small gems.

The Annotated Brothers Grimm (The Annotated Books)

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

Maria Tatar redefines the Grimm canon with this authoritative and entertaining collection. The Annotated Brothers Grimm celebrates the richness and dramatic power of the legendary fables in the most spectacular and unusual Grimm volume in decades. Containing forty stories in new translations by Maria Tatar―including "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," "Snow White," and "Rapunzel"―the book also features 150 illustrations, many of them in color, by legendary painters such as George Cruikshank and Arthur Rackham; hundreds of annotations that explore the historical origins, cultural complexities, and psychological effects of these tales; and a biographical essay on the lives of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Perhaps most noteworthy is Tatar's decision to include tales that were previously excised, including a few bawdy stories and others that were removed after the Grimms learned that parents were reading the book to their children―stories about cannibalism in times of famine and stories in which children die at the end. Enchanting and magical, The Annotated Brothers Grimm will cast its spell on children and adults alike for decades to come. 75 color and 75 black-and-white illustrations

The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Padraic Colum (Introduction)

The stories of magic and myth gathered by the Brothers Grimm have become part of the way children—and adults—learn about the vagaries of the real world. Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow-White, Hänsel and Gretel, Little Red-Cap (Little Red Riding Hood), and Briar-Rose (Sleeping Beauty) are only a few of the more than two hundred enchanting characters included in this volume. The tales are presented just as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm originally set them down: bold, primal, just frightening enough, and endlessly engaging.

The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

The original version of the Grimms' tales in English for the first time—in an acclaimed, illustrated edition

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö.

From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold—heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique—they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes.

A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales (Leather-bound Classics)

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

The original fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm are the foundation from which many modern retellings have emerged.

They are the stories we've known since we were children: Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty. But the works originally collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early 1800s are not necessarily the versions we heard before bedtime. They're darker and often don’t end happily—but they’re often far more interesting. This elegant edition of Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales includes all the cherished favorites—Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Cap, and more—in their original versions. Many of these tales begin with the familiar refrain of “once upon a time”—but they end with something unexpected and fascinating! With specially designed endpapers, a genuine leather cover, and other enhancements, this edition is the perfect gift for anyone looking to build a complete home library.

Grimm's Household Tales

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm (1786–1859), began collecting folklore in 1806 in response to a renewed German interest in the subject. Their first collection of fairy tales, Children’s and Household Tales, was published in 1812, forever popularizing such stories as “Cinderella,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Rapunzel,” and “Snow White.”

Mervyn Peake’s illustrated edition of the Grimms’ Household Tales was originally published in 1946, and this is the first time it has been made available since then with the original color illustrations. Like the Grimms’ stories, Peake’s illustrations combine the comic and the sinister and evoke a strong sense of childhood fear and humor. Stories by the Grimms remain wildly popular to this day, and this beautiful edition contains many old favorites such as “Sleeping Beauty,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Snow White,” and “Cinderella,” as well as a number of less familiar tales. Complementing the stories and illustrations is an introduction by novelist Sarah Waters, a lifelong fan of Peake’s illustrations.

De L'origine Du Langage: ... (French Edition)

by Jacob Grimm

The conventional story of the end of the Cold War is simple: Ronald Reagan waged an aggressive campaign against communism, outspent his opponent, and forced Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall."

In There Is No Freedom Without Bread!, Russian-born historian Constantine Pleshakov proposes a different interpretation. The revolutions that took place in 1989 were the result of politicking, tensions between Moscow and local governments, compromise between revolutionary leaders and communist old-timers, and the will and anger of the people. In a dramatic narrative culminating in that whirlwind year, Pleshakov challenges the received wisdom and argues that 1989 was as much about national civil wars and internal struggles for power as it was about the Eastern Europeans throwing off the yoke of Moscow.

The Annotated Brothers Grimm

by Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm

"This is the book I wanted as a child and didn’t have, the book I’d have liked both to give to my children and to keep for myself, the book I shall give my grandchildren." ―A. S. Byatt, from the introduction to The Annotated Brothers Grimm
Of all of the rich fairy-tale collections that exist in countries throughout the world, few are better known than those gathered almost two centuries ago by a pair of German brothers―Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm―in their Children’s Stories and Household Tales, first published in 1812. Endlessly recast and reimagined in poetry and prose, on the screen and onstage, these stories are forever etched in our imagination. Here, in this bicentennial edition of The Annotated Brothers Grimm, Maria Tatar presents these timeless stories in a sumptuous and visually powerful format that helps reshape our understanding of the Brothers Grimm.
Drawing from the final authoritative version in the mid-nineteenth century, Tatar, an internationally recognized scholar in the field of folklore and children’s literature, has translated and provided commentary for more than fifty Grimm stories, judiciously selecting tales that resonate with modern audiences and reveal the broad thematic range of the Grimm canon. Readers young and old will encounter popular classics, including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” and “Rapunzel,” while discovering some of the lesser known yet equally captivating stories such as “Four Artful Brothers,” “The Water of Life,” and “The White Snake,” all new to this edition. Perhaps most noteworthy is Tatar’s decision to include tales excised from later editions, including a number of “adult” stories that were removed once the Grimms realized that parents were reading the stories to children.
Tatar’s own translations are accompanied by insightful annotations that search for origins, uncover cultural complexities, and explore psychological effects. Nearly two hundred images of exquisite beauty, many of them new to this edition―by artists such as George Cruikshank, Gustave Doré, Kay Nielsen, and Arthur Rackham―are reproduced alongside the stories. With a brilliant introductory essay by A. S. Byatt, along with the Grimms’ original prefaces to their editions, a collection of reminiscences about “The Magic of Fairy Tales,” and essays on the lives of the Brothers Grimm and the cultural impact of their tales, The Annotated Brothers Grimm captures the magical appeal of the tales while also unlocking their potent mysteries.
In the tradition of Bruno Bettelheim’s The Uses of Enchantment, this volume shows how the Grimms’ fairy tales animate our imaginations and remain with us long after we have put them aside. The Bicentennial Edition of The Annotated Brothers Grimm offers a treasury of cultural lore and wisdom that has been passed on from one generation to the next. 75 color, 75 black-and-white illustrations
