Mid/South Sonnets brings together sixty-six poets with ties throughout the American South. From Oklahoma to Florida-with larger clusters of work from the more centrally located Mid-Southern states, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee-the states represented through these writers offer a wide range of landscapes and perspectives that speak to the region's eclectic nature. While this anthology includes many conventional and experimental approaches to the sonnet form, each poem ultimately enacts an attempt to struggle through the anxieties of home in the hope of finding a place to love and belong.

The Dog Years of Reeducation: Poems
In the Chinese Cultural Revolution, millions of middle school and high school graduates, called the zhiqing or Educated Youth, were sent up to the mountains and down to the countryside to receive reeducation from the poor peasants. With deep conviction that they would play an important role in the transformation of rural China, the zhiqing became field hands, never realizing that reeducation was both a physical and psychological challenge. This collection of poetry is the representation of those reeducation years in the fields. Half a century has passed, but memories remain fresh, each a page of suffering, cheering, or dreaming to turn.

Jianqing Zheng is the author of The Dog Years of Reeducation, A Way of Looking, and five
poetry chapbooks and e-chapbooks; editor of seven scholarly books, including Conversations
with Dana Gioia and Sonia Sanchez’s Poetic Spirit through Haiku; and coeditor of four scholarly
books, including Dana Gioia: Poet & Critic. He received the 2019 Gerald Cable Book Prize,
2001 Slapering Hol Press Chapbook Award, and three Mississippi Arts Commission poetry
fellowships, among other awards and honors. He is a professor of English at Mississippi Valley
State University, where he founded and edits the Journal of Ethnic American Literature and
Valley Voices: A Literary Review. His poems have appeared in numerous magazines, including
Another Chicago Magazine, Arkansas Review, Birmingham Poetry Review, Cimarron Review,
Hanging Loose, Mississippi Review, and Spillway.
