Charley Harper: Mystery Of The Missing Migrants: Puzzle

by Pomegranate Communications, Inc. (cor)

Mystery of the Missing Migrants, 1990, by Charley Harper (American, 1922?2007). The artist's own words: For centuries, the neotropical migrants in this picture have shuttled between winter homes in the tropical rainforest and nesting sites in our woodlands. Now their populations are plummeting. Why? Habitat destruction. Down There? Up Here? Is your favorite songster in this flock? Each April, I listen anxiously to the dawn chorus for the return of my favorite, that world-class flutist, the Wood Thrush. Are silent springs forthcoming? Remember the canary in the coal mine? Forty-five birds are presented in Charley Harper's own unique "minimal realism" style. See the back of the puzzle box for the identification of each species. Thoughtfully conceived and engagingly intricate, Pomegranate's interlocking jigsaw puzzles combine superb color reproduction, stunning and unusual images, and heirloom - quality construction to delight generations of puzzle solvers.

Sea Otters 2020 Wall Calendar

by Inc., Pomegranate Communications

In the waning days of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), China's first formal art schools were founded in an atmosphere of spirited debate about tradition, reform, and what it meant to be an artist in that culture. The painter Chao Shao-an (1905-1998) came of age following this upheaval. A leader in the modernist movement, Chao strove, like his masters, both "to learn from nature [and to] be inspired by [an] inner sensibility." In his mid-twenties he established the Lingnan Art Studio in order to advance this fresh and vital approach. Chao's fluid brushwork, rich colors, and inventive composition are evident in this calendar's reproductions of twelve of his paintings. All are from the collection of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. Elegant Herbs & Medicinal Plants 2020 Wall Calendar

by Inc., Pomegranate Communications

Long before modern medicine and the corner drugstore, herbalists dispensed celery to treat lunacy and considered aloe a veritable wonder drug able to purify phlegm, prevent hair loss, and remedy moral decay and corruption. Since antiquity, herbs and medicinal plants (known as simples) have been studied, documented, and used to treat a host of human complaints—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Today, medieval medical tomes such as the twelfth-century Book of Simple Medicines, by Italian physician Matthaeus Platearius (?–1161), are appreciated as snapshots of history. The illustrations reproduced in this calendar are the work of French artist Robinet Testard (fl. 1470–1523). They were selected from Le Livre des simples médecines (c. 1470), an updated, annotated, and richly decorated French version of Platearius’s book created for Louise of Savoy and her husband, Charles d’Angoulême. This vellum manuscript is in the collection of the National Library, St. Petersburg, Russia. The Art of Tibet 2020 Wall Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

Tibet exists on “the roof of the world,” its high altitude and geographic isolation setting it apart from its continental neighbors. Yet even high deserts, plunging valleys, and skyscraping mountains could not bar cultural and religious influence from Asia and beyond, a fact made evident in the vibrant, highly evolved art of Tibet. Buddhist religious traditions, introduced to Tibet in the seventh century, profoundly affected Tibetan art, which in turn was used to spread Buddha’s teachings. The beauty and complex iconography of Tibetan thangkas—meditational paintings made of ground mineral pigments on cloth—encouraged the devoted along their path to spiritual enlightenment. The thangkas in this calendar span some six hundred years, beginning in the early twelfth century. These remarkable Tibetan paintings are from the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A Journey into 366 Days of Black History 2020 Wall Calendar

by Inc., Pomegranate Communications

American artist Eric Wert is known for visually intense, sensually charged still lifes that are anything but still. Whether on small or large canvases, his larger-than-life oil paintings nearly vibrate with saturated color and decadent detail. Influenced by Dutch still life painters, he uses stunning jewel tones to depict sumptuous subject matter, taking traditional compositions in new directions. Not surprisingly, Wert (b. 1976) began his career as a scientific illustrator. He received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a master of fine arts degree from Northwestern University. He has had solo exhibitions from New Mexico to Massachusetts, and his work has been included in group shows around the world. He lives in Portland, Oregon. More than one hundred of his artworks can be found in the book Eric Wert: Still Life (Pomegranate, 2018).All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. Art Cats 2020 Wall Calendar

by Inc., Pomegranate Communications

“I am not a friend, and I am not a servant. I am the Cat who walks by himself.” —Rudyard Kipling,
Just So Stories
Every cat lover has a repertoire of more or less amusing anecdotes about their little four-legged family member. That may be because cats pay their rent by performing acts of comic mayhem, amazing grace, and breathtaking self-regard.
Cats seem to take themselves very seriously, and the artists whose works are gathered here have taken them seriously as well. These images go beyond deft and faithful representation: they are works of art that speak to their creators’ sensibilities, surroundings, and times. The common denominator, however, may be their desire to capture in their art the elusive, ambiguous essence of cat.
Immensely dignified or riotously unselfconscious, elegantly poised or absurdly relaxed, the feline shines in this Art Cats calendar.

African American Art 2020 Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

"In widely varied artistic styles, the works in this calendar survey key moments in African American art. The oldest painting here, created prior to the Civil War, lacks any hint of the artist's identity, existing within the formal traditions of the era. With the early twentieth century came a transformation: the Harlem Renaissance, a movement whose art bursts with powerful expressions of African American life. Artists raised in this cultural moment went on to create a wealth of socially conscious works in the decades that followed. Though some artists worked outside this arc—either self-taught or decidedly apart—new narrative works affirmed the role of African American art as valuable commentary, a cornerstone of resistance, and a celebration of black heritage. The works in this calendar are in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington. All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. Votes for Women! Celebrating 100 Years 2020 Wall Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

The campaign for women's right to vote spanned more than seven decades, reaching its peak in the decade before the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was made law in 1920. Part of an international movement, American suffragists were inspired by the tactics used by their British counterparts, but in both countries, activists faced strong opposition. Suffrage organizations published their own posters and periodicals to counter the magazine covers and other imagery—including sheet music covers—published by those opposed to women's suffrage. The British and American artworks in this calendar are drawn from the collections of the Library of Congress, the world's largest library. All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. Antique Quilts 2020 Wall Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

No longer simply bed coverings to keep people warm, quilts made in nineteenth-century America were often works of art. Improvements in the economy and advances in textile manufacturing allowed women of means to purchase fabrics in colors and patterns of their choosing to express their creativity. Patterns were handed down through families and religious communities, or were created for special occasions such as weddings. Medallion styles feature a central image; log cabin patterns are made from narrow strips of fabric pieced around a square; and crazy quilts have the appearance of random piecework in silk, satin, and velvet, with plenty of embellishments embroidered or painted on top. The quilts in this calendar are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. England by Rail 2018 Wall Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

After the First World War, an act of Parliament distilled a disorganized, inefficient private railway system into four geographically apportioned railways. These went on to serve commuters, travelers, and industry until the late 1940s, when the railways were nationalized. The posters in this calendar are a small sample of each railway s robust advertising output during this period, when both accomplished landscape painters and little-known designers were hired to create these enticing scenes.

America by Rail 2018 Wall Calendar

Before the days of interstate highways, trains were the mainstay of American long-distance travel. Going by train was a relatively affordable luxury, and vacationers took to the rails for unparalleled views of the country from New England coastal towns to the California Redwoods. Serving various regions, competitive private rail companies hired artists to create posters that would convey the excitement of trains and the beauty of the destinations they served. These posters survive today as snapshots of the glory days of traveling America by rail.

Japanese Woodblock Prints 2018 Engagement Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

During the progressive Meiji period (1868 1912), interest in ukiyo-e ( pictures of the floating world) woodblock printmaking declined in Japan as a more modern aesthetic became popular, and by the early 1900s the tradition had practically disappeared. But due mainly to the dedication of publisher Watanabe Sh zabur (1885 1962), who undertook the mission of educating his countrymen about the tradition and encouraged them to collect woodblock prints, an era of elegant new prints began. The thirty-two woodcuts in this calendar are selections from Kawase Hasui (1883 1957), Ohara Sh son (1877 1945), Hiroshi Yoshida (1876 1950), and other artists of the period.

Haiku: Japanese Art & Poetry 2019 Wall Calendar

by Pomegranate Communications

The roots of Japanese haiku reach back over a thousand years. In the Japanese haiku poem, as in life, there is a pause, a shift, in which the poet celebrates sensory awareness of the season, perhaps suggested by the scent of red plum blossoms or the silence of snow-covered tree limbs. The timeless appeal of this understated poetic form may be the human desire to capture one’s impressions of a fleeting moment. Such seasonal allusions emphasize the essence of haiku: nature and its ephemeral beauty. This calendar features twelve haiku paired with reproductions of exquisite Japanese woodcuts from the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Each poem is rendered in Japanese calligraphy, Romaji transliteration, and English translation.
Pomegranate also publishes the books
Shin Hanga: The New Print Movement of Japan, by Barry Till, and
