Arts Crafts Block Prints With Envelope

by William S. Rice

William Seltzer Rice (18731963) was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Northern California in 1900, when the regions Arts & Crafts movement was flowering. A talented and prolific watercolorist, Rice taught at various schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oaklanda center for the movement. He became devoted to block printing because compared with original watercolors, prints better suited the Arts & Crafts ethos of making artwork available to a wide audience at modest cost. Unlike many printmakers, Rice designed, carved, and printed the blocks all himself. The landscapes of Northern Californiafrom the Sierra Nevada to the Pacificproved excellent raw materials for his creativity, and his prints today can be found in public and private collections worldwide.

Arts & Crafts Block Prints: Wm. S. Rice 2020 Wall Calendar

by William S. Rice

William Seltzer Rice (American, 1873–1963) was twenty-seven when he came to California in 1900 to teach art in the Stockton public schools. He traveled, sketched, and painted throughout the state and familiarized himself with its history, flora, and fauna. In 1910 he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, continuing his career in teaching and taking an active part in the Arts and Crafts movement. He favored block printing as a means of bringing original art within reach of many people. Each color print required several blocks, of either wood or linoleum, all of which he designed, carved, and printed himself. Rice’s elegant yet humble prints continue to be exhibited widely and are in many museum collections worldwide.
