This edition of Selected Poems includes A Street in Bronzeville, Brooks's first published volume of poetry for which she became nationally known and which led to successive Guggenheim fellowships; Annie Allen, published one year before she became the first African American author to win the Pulitzer Prize in any category; and The Bean Eaters, her fifth publication which expanded her focus from studies of the lives of mainly poor urban black Americans to the heroism of early civil rights workers and events of particular outrage—including the 1955 Emmett Till lynching and the 1957 school desegregation crisis in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Frank O’Hara (1926–1966) was one of the most original and influential American poets of the twentieth century. Poco después se encontró el cadáver de uno de sus primos y muy cerca de ahí apareció ella, con el vestido desgarrado. Lorca, admirado por cómo la vida nos brinda nuevos dramas de un modo inesperado, teje una obra en la que se dan cita las pasiones que nos hacen humanos, desde el amor hasta el sufrimiento, la venganza, el miedo y el odio. El resultado es una sobrecogedora tragedia que da forma a una idea lorquiana: a sus personajes se les tienen que ver «los huesos y la sangre».

La presente edición incluye los bocetos -inéditos- que el artista José Caballero hizo para el estreno de la obra en Barcelona por la compañía de Margarita Xirgu.

It all began with a wedding to which the bride did not show up. Shortly after, her cousin’s corpse was found and very close to it, was the bride with a torn dress. Bernarda Alba is orthodox, overbearing, and single minded. She has complete control over her five daughters until the wealth of her eldest daughter, Angustias, attracts a suitor.

Her other daughters are jealous that Angustias—who is almost forty and is homely and sickly—is getting married and escaping the tyrannical reach of their mother. All of Bernarda’s other daughters dream of escaping that house too, and some of them are willing to do anything to get away. Tensions rise as the sisters forsake their family ties and compete against each other for the one thing that can save them from their mother’s rule: a man.
