The Steadfast Tin Soldier
by Hans Christian Andersen, Cynthia Rylant, Hans Christian Anderson
With her signature warmth and lyricism, Newbery winner Cynthia Rylant has crafted a new version of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about a tin soldier who falls in love with a ballerina. As in the original story, the tin soldier’s love for the beautiful ballerina is thwarted by a goblin. The tin soldier is separated from the other toys and washed down a sewer, where he encounters a rat and gets swallowed by a fish, but somehow, against all odds, he manages to end up back home only to be cast into the nursery fire. Rylant adds her own twist to the end of the tale, however, for in this version, the tin soldier and the ballerina are melded to each other, rather than melted, in the heat of the fire, so they’ll never be parted again. Rylant’s expert storytelling paired with Corace’s stunning illustrations create a beautiful, unforgettable tale of everlasting love.
Praise for The Steadfast Tin Soldier
STARRED REVIEW
"Rylant preserves the story's character-building insistence on the soldier's decorum throughout his ordeal. At the same time, the sight of him in his dress uniform, bayonet at the ready, lodged upside down in a garden bed or lying patiently in the belly of the huge fish will make readers smile."
―Publishers Weekly, starred review
"Gracefully written... The book’s large format gives plenty of scope for Corace’s distinctive illustrations, precise ink drawings brightened with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paints. Sometimes brilliantly colorful and sometimes more subdued, the scenes can be crowded with dozens of toys or other visual elements, but they show up well from a distance. The subtle depictions of the goblin and his shadow are particularly fine. A softened vision of the literary fairy tale."
―Booklist
"The distinctive illustrations capture both the story’s melodrama and playful appeal, such as when two boys salute the tin soldier as his newspaper boat speeds along the fast-moving gutter stream. This spirited retelling reinvigorates this classic tale."
―School Library Journal
"Rylant is an appealing storyteller, and though she lets the soldier stay “forevermore” with the little dancer, that romantic outcome may suit those who find the Dane’s bittersweet ending hard to bear."
―HornBook
"Corace uses a largely pastel-color palette to match the author’s words. Mixed media flesh out the story. Their work together provides a powerful presentation in this oversize picture book. This is an excellent choice to compare with other versions of the classic tale."

It's not easy being small, but in Brad Sneed's lovely new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's Thumbelina, at least life is full of adventure. Soon after being born from a fiery red flower, Thumbelina is kidnapped from home and pursued by many suitors, including a horrible toad, a bumbling beetle, and a grumpy mole--until the plucky heroine finds a true love who fits her just right.
Sneed's rich, detailed watercolors are a true standout, illustrating the animals and natural world with remarkable realism and vibrancy. The story, lighthearted and lively, has a simple text that keeps the elegant flavor of the original tale, yet is perfect for a picture book audience.
Brad Sneed's fresh look at a well-loved fairy tale is simply sumptuous!

Review
The only thing lacking in this excellent unabridged narration of a Hans Christian Andersen classic is a more attractive color cover to invite kids to sample: Wetzel's narrative style is dramatic and enlightening and provides the highlights of an excellent, classic short story. Look beyond the black and white liner to receive an excellent story revived. --

Fairy Tales
by Hans Christian Andersen, E. E. Cummings, Meilo So
From AudioFile For listeners who haven't heard the classic Andersen fairly tales since their childhood, this collection from a new translation is a joy. All the famous stories are there, including "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Emperor's New Clothes." His later works also are included, such as "The Ice Maiden" and "The Wood Nymph." But listeners, especially parents planning to play this for children, should be aware that some of the stories are a little violent. For example, an oafish farmer kills his grandmother because he thinks it will bring him great wealth. But the violence is not graphic and can be explained to young listeners. Narrators Kate Reading and Richard Matthews alternate stories, a strategy that provides nice variety. Both are solid and engaging. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine Product description A gawky, dreamy boy, Hans Christian Andersen grew up to become a profoundly imaginative writer and storyteller who revolutionized literature for children. Andersen gave us the now standard versions of some traditional folk tales as well as original stories that have enchanted generations of readers. To commemorate the bicentennial of his birth, Viking will publish a new translation of thirty of his extraordinary tales, illustrated with Andersens own paper cuts. From the exuberant early stories such as The Tinderbox and The Emperors New Clothes through poignant masterpieces such as The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling, to darker, more subversive later tales written for adults, the stories here are endlessly experimental, humorous and irreverent, sorrowful and strange. Tiina Nunnallys sparkling new translation capturesfor the first time in Englishthe vibrancy of Andersens voice. Compiled by Andersens biographer Jackie Wullschlager, who also contributes notes and a captivating introduction, this volume will be a major literary event that will dazzle readers young and old.

Fairy Tales
by Hans Christian Andersen, E. E. Cummings, Meilo So
These whimsical, timeless tales, by one of our most treasured poets, will appeal to any generation. The four tales in this enchanting, newly illustrated volume, tell of lonely and extraordinary characters finding friendship in unlikely companions. In "The Old Man Who Said Why" a wise fairy's kind nature is taxed when one old man's questions throw the entire heavens into madness. In "The Elephant and the Butterfly" and "The House That Ate Mosquito Pie" shyness is overcome by the compelling love of new friends. "The Little Girl Named I" is a conversation between the author and a small girl, in the manner of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh.
Clever, insightful, and magical, peopled with vivid characters―a house that prefers one bird to any human inhabitants, an elephant paralyzed with delight, a fairy who "always breakfasted on light and silence"here are tales as only Cummings could write them. A delightful and surprising gift for anyone, young or old. 21 color watercolors

Tales and Stories by Hans Christian Andersen
Stories that have delighted children and fascinated adults for over a century are the heritage of Hans Christian Andersen. This collection has been selected and translated with the growing audience of adults―both students and general readers―in mind, and displays the full range of Andersen's authorship, from parable to science fiction.
In this fresh, contemporary translation Rossel and Conroy have endeavored to "preserve for the English-speaking audience the engaging duplicity of Andersen's style, the tension of play between his sympathetic conversational tone and his use of the studied effect." This is a tension between the simplicity of stories intended to be read aloud to children ad the subtlety of the allegory skillfully woven into each for the adults who would be listening and "must have something to think about," as Andersen said.
The introductions provide an overview of Andersen's life and struggle to become an author, as well as an analysis of his contributions as an artist and storyteller. Each story has also been provided with an endnote giving publication dates, information about the genesis of the tale, and relevant comments by Andersen and other.
Readers who remember with nostalgia such tales as "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Match Girl" may be surprised to find the biting satire in many of the stories, such as "The Nightingale" and "The Gardener and the Lord and Lady," the revealing self-portraits of the author in "The Sweethearts," "The Butterfly," and "The Shadow," the mysticism of "The story of a Mother" and "The Bell" the prophetic quality of "In a Thousand Years Time," and the complexity and charm of "the Snow Queen."
The book contains the drawings of Vilhelm Pedersen and Lorenz Frolich that originally appeared in the first illustrated Danish editions of Andersen's tales and stories.

Hans Christian Andersen: The Complete Fairy Tales and Stories (Anchor Folktale Library)
by Hans Christian Andersen, Virginia Haviland, Erik Christian Haugaard
This definitive collection of work from Hans Christian Andersen—one of the immortals of world literature—not only includes his own notes to his stories but is the only version available in trade paperback that presents Andersen's fairy tales exactly as he collected them in the original Danish edition of 1874. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, which Victorian translators and their imitators very often altered to sentimentalize or vulgarize, translator Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text.
The fairy tales Hans Christian Andersen wrote, such as "The Snow Queen," "The Ugly Duckling," "The Red Shoes," and "The Nightingale," are remarkable for their sense of fantasy, power of description, and acute sensitivity, and they are like no others written before or since. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore, Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms of the fairy tale and the folktale and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own.

Product Description Hans Christian Andersen's poignant story of a poor child trying to survive on the city streets is among the world's best-loved tales. Andersen, who grew up in the slums of Odense, Denmark, had first-hand knowledge of poverty and neglect. Drawing on his childhood experiences, he created a tale that has touched the hearts of generations. Christine San José captures the heart and lyricism of Andersen's classic in a tale "told with originality and grace," according to School Library Journal. First published in 1995, this retelling features beautiful new illustrations by Kestutis Kasparavicius. From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 3-A faithful retelling of the tale in which a poor child, unsuccessful in selling her matches on New Year's Eve and afraid to return home with no money, freezes to death on the streets. The reteller's dedication urges readers to remember "the boys and girls of the world who need us." The pretty illustrations, however, set the tale firmly in the Scandinavian world of the 19th century. Jerry Pinkney's adaptation of this story (Penguin Putnam, 1999) is more successful at creating a historical context in which contemporary children can imagine and empathize with the unfortunate young protagonist.-V. W. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist PreS-Gr. 3. The little match girl, surely the most pathetic figure in children's literature, walks barefoot through the snowy streets on New Year's Eve. Unable to sell her matches and afraid to return home, she sinks to the ground and, to keep away the cold, lights one match after another. The matches she lights bring not only warmth and light but also comfort and, finally, a vision of her beloved grandmother. Begging her grandmother not to leave her alone, she lights all her remaining matches and is taken up to heaven. Passers-by find her body the next morning. San Jose provides a simplified but dignified retelling. A young child can understand the text, but few parents of preschoolers will want to present them with stories in which a child dies. Kasparavicius' softly colored ink-and-watercolor illustrations create lovely if sometimes static effects. A respectful rendering of the classic tale. The Emperor's New Clothes
by Hans Christian Andersen, Starbright Foundation, Riki Levinson, Eve Tharlet, Marcus Sedgwick, Christine San Jose, Eric S. Rosen, Michener, Ted
From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4-When Andersen's vain emperor and his court are decked out in the fashions of 16th-century France, including the monarch in his underwear, the result is a particularly uproarious version of this well-loved classic. In her cartoonlike watercolors, Tharlet uses light, bright pastel tones for the clothing of everyone except the charlatan tailors, who are clad in sober brown and gray. Among the many small pictorial additions that extend the text's humor are the emperor's teddy bear, lying beside him as his breakfast-in-bed arrives, and a little dog with fleas that appears on several pages. The story is retold in simple, straightforward sentences. This fresh, delightful interpretation would be a good choice for reading alone or aloud.Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description Once upon a time there was a vain emperor who loved new clothes more than anything. He was the perfect dupe for two sly tricksters' clever plot. Claiming to be able to weave a fabulous cloth that is invisible to all who are stupid or unfit for their jobs, the tricksters promise to create a marvelous set of clothes for the emperor to wear in the great procession. The emperor pays the tricksters handsomely for their work, but he and his subjects are in for a very big surprise!Eve Tharlet's sweet, simple adaptation of one of Hans Christian Andersen's jolliest stories shows just how foolhardy pride and vanity can be. From Booklist In this high-spirited adaptation, Tharlet captures perfectly the satire and mischievous fun of a perennial favorite. Rich with historical details, the full-page spreads show the bustle of the town and the excitement as the boastful strangers arrive, work their way into the palace, labor over their imaginary cloth, and send His Majesty through the streets in a suit of long underwear. The watercolor-and-pencil illustrations enhance the story's inherent appeal with clear, visual characterizations of the prissy, vain king; the bumbling, idiotic ministers; the devious con men; and the clear-eyed, precocious boy who calls out the truth. Using soft-edged colors, simple dot-eyed faces, and silly hairstyles, Tharlet infuses the story's humorous moral lesson with playfulness that's perfect for story hours, while the well-written, simple text is suitable for beginning readers. The Fir Tree
by Hans Christian Andersen, Tiina Nunnally, Sanna Annukka
Hans Christian Andersen (1805 – 1875) was a Danish fairy tale writer, and poet noted for his children's stories. During his lifetime he was acclaimed for having delighted children worldwide, and was feted by royalty. His poetry and stories have been translated into more than 150 languages. Andersen’s fairy tales of fantasy with moral lessons are popular with children and adults all over the world, and they also contain autobiographical details of the man himself. "The Fir Tree" by Hans Christian Andersen, published originally in 1845, follows the life of a young fir tree living in the woods. Compared to the other trees around him, he feels small, spindly and short, and he constantly utters complaint to any and all woodland creatures within ear shot. Most pointedly, he wonders "when will he truly be alive?" When he sees humans cut down some beautiful trees nearby and then drag them across the snow, he asks the swallows, "Where are they going?" In answer they tell him of all Christmas's splendor and beauty of which those lucky trees will soon be a part. Yet when the time comes for our little fir tree to have his turn, he's taught an unexpected and irreversible lesson. This children's e-book is fully illustrated all-color. Young readers will love the charming all-color illustrations, while parents will appreciate the moral at the end of the story. The beautiful illustrations will captivate your child's imagination and bring them back to read it over again and again.

Following on the brilliant success of The Little Match Girl and his fourth Caldecott Honor Book, The Ugly Duckling, Jerry Pinkney brings us another enchanting adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. The Nightingale is the story of a plain little bird whose beautiful songs bring her great fame, even winning her an esteemed place in the king's court. Eventually, however, after saving the life of the king, the modest nightingale chooses to return to her peaceful life in the forest. Although the original tale is set in China, Jerry Pinkney decided to add a unique twist to his own adaptation by moving the setting to Morocco-and the resulting artwork is spectacular. The lush, elaborate watercolor illustrations feature the diverse peoples, rich costumes, and amazing architecture of Northwest Africa, making this version of The Nightingale a true picture book original!

When he learns that the nightingale's song is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world, the Emperor of China sends his courtiers to find the bird and present it as a guest at court. The nightingale can speak to humans and agrees to come, but when the Emperor receives a mechanical nightingale covered in jewels, he discards the real bird, which flies back to its home. Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved story in which a king learns humility from a bird was written in 1843 to honor Jenny Lind, the famous opera singer dubbed the Swedish Nightingale. This new edition of the childhood favorite features shimmering color illustrations by Russian artist Igor Oleynikov.

Winner of NAPPA Children's Resources Gold Award
Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark and grew up to be the world's greatest storyteller. He is best known for hist stories The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea, The Ugly Duckling, The Nightingale, and The Emperor's New Clothes. His stories are loved by children everywhere.
In Mus White's skillful adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic folk story, "There Is No Doubt About It", the news that a hen has lost a feather grows into a humorous tale of five chickens engaged in battle as the story spreads from coop to coop and from hen to hen. This new translation is faithful to the original and yet remains as fresh and appealing today as the day it was written.
Stefan Czernecki's bright primary illustrations and panel design reflect the comic boldness as each chicken passes along the story, until it is no longer recognizable to the original hen who started it in the first place. For Sure! For Sure! is a powerful story with a strong message that both children and adults will enjoy. This retelling of an old fairytale teaches readers the importance of citizenship and trustworthiness.

Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales (She Children's Classic)
Product Description A collection of classic tales includes "Ugly Duckling," "The Snow Queen," "Thumbelina," and " The Brave Tin Soldier." From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 6AChildren and adults whose knowledge of Hans Christian Andersen is based on movies or abridged retellings are in for a genuine treat as nine of his best-loved fairy tales are read aloud by actress Judi Dench. The versions of the tales selected for this collection are authentic, with no attempt made to update or modernize them. The effect is pure Andersen with the beautiful language resonating through Dench's skillful reading. For listeners who have never heard "The Little Mermaid," Dench's reading of the description of the sea witch's lair is chilling. The old soldier of "The Tinderbox" is crafty and world-weary by turns as Dench recreates the spirit of Andersen's tales. The sound quality is excellent, and the audience will savor every bit of dialogue and narrative. Young children who are accustomed to shortened versions of "The Ugly Duckling" may not be ready for this full-length version, while older listeners may appreciate the original story especially with Dench's poignant interpretation. Teachers and librarians who wish to introduce students to the true Hans Christian Andersen will find this collection a real treasure.ANancy L. Chu, Western Illinois University, MacombCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. From AudioFile Judi Dench's delivery is extremely polished, and her British accent gives these stories a unique flavor. Dench reads a selection of the most popular Andersen tales: "The Ugly Duckling," "The Little Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes," and so on. New Danish Plays (Series B (Norvik Press))
Jess Ornsbo's Odysseus from Vraa is set in a modern environment with characters shorn of any heroic and mythical qualities. Set in late seventeenth century Denmark, Sven Holm's Lenora is about Lenora Christina, daughter of a Danish king and devoted wife of a traitor during her last years, coming to terms with her faith and her fate. Morning and Evening, by Astrid Saalbach, follows a group of characters through the course of a day, observing their attempts to communicate with each other in a fragmented world where not even personality is fixed, and actors can take on new roles, which are yet vaguely reminiscent of the old. The final work is Kaj Nissen's radio play, Fair Kirstin, an historical monologue spoken by a country girl who becomes the mistress of the king of Denmark. Additional translators include Julian Garner and Malene S. Madsen.

Two Baronesses, The
In addition to the fairy tales for which he was so well known, Hans Christian Andersen published several novels including "The Two Baronesses" (1848), "Be or Not to Be" (1857), and "Lucky Peter" (1870). There is a good deal of autobiographical material in all of them. "The Two Baronesses," with "The Improvisatore" perhaps the best of Andersen's novels, owed some of its inspiration to the works of Sir Walter Scott, which Andersen greatly admired, and particularly to "The Heart of Midlothian," his favorite novel.

The Little Match Girl
It was terribly cold and quickly growing dark on the last evening of the old year. The snow was coming down fast and covering everything in a thick white blanket. In the cold and dark, a poor little girl, with a bare head and naked feet, roamed the streets all alone.
She had been wearing a pair of slippers when she left home that morning. But they were of little use. They were too large, so large, in fact, that they belonged to her mother. The little girl had lost them running across a street to avoid two horse-drawn carriages that were racing along very fast and might have crushed her beneath their steel-covered wheels. Afterward, she could not find one of the slippers. A boy grabbed the other and ran away, saying that he would use it as a cradle when he had children of his own.
So the little girl went on in her naked feet, which soon turned red and blue from the cold. In an old apron that was much too big for her, she carried some matches. She had a bundle of them in her hands and had tried very hard that day to sell them to strangers on the street. But no one had bought a single match the whole day. No one had even given her a penny out of kindness. Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along, ignored by all and unseen by most. The snowflakes fell on her long hair, which hung in curls down to her shoulders. Poor little child, she looked so miserable and so lonely.

Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, With the original Danish illustrations
Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales are like exquisite jewels, drawing from us gasps of recognition and delight. Writing in the midst of a Europe-wide rebirth of national literature, Anderson broke new ground with his fairy tales in two important ways. First, he composed them in the vernacular, mimicking the language he used in telling them to children aloud. Second, he set his tales in his own land and time, giving rise to his loving descriptions of the Danish countryside. In contrast to such folklorists as the Brothers Grimm, Anderson’s tales are grounded in the real and often focus on the significance of small or overlooked things.

Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Published in Cooperation with the Hans Christian Andersen House, Odense (In Four Volumes)
Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories, called eventyr in Danish or 'fairy-tales' in English, express themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include 'The Emperor's New Clothes,' 'The Little Mermaid,' 'The Nightingale,' 'The Snow Queen,' 'The Ugly Duckling,' and many more. His stories have inspired ballets, both animated and live-action films, and plays.

In her most ambitious annotated work to date, Maria Tatar celebrates the stories told by Denmark's "perfect wizard" and re-envisions Hans Christian Andersen as a writer who casts his spell on both children and adults. Andersen's most beloved tales, such as "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Little Mermaid," are now joined by "The Shadow" and "Story of a Mother," mature stories that reveal his literary range and depth. Lushly illustrated with more than one hundred fifty rare images, many in full color, by artists such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen will captivate readers with annotations that explore the rich social and cultural dimensions of the nineteenth century and construct a compelling portrait of a writer whose stories still fascinate us today.

The Fairy Tales. Grimm & Andersen 2 in 1. 40th Ed.
by Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm
More than 200 years ago, two brothers from Kassel, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, published the first volume of their collection of German folktales. Over time the stories in their collection grew until finally they numbered 200 fairy tales and ten legends. What was initially an attempt to preserve German traditions for posterity is today the most widely read collection of stories after the Bible. From Snow White to Cinderella and Rapunzel to Rumpelstiltskin, the Brothers Grimm left behind a canon of fairy tales that have become classics of children’s literature, part of the UNESCO world heritage, and an indispensable piece of our history and culture.
Hans Christian Andersen’s own life seemed to be out of a fairy tale—Charles Dickens was among his friends and admirers, and European princes held him in high regard. Through determination, talent, many a fortunate coincidence, and an exuberant imagination, he came out of impoverished circumstances to write himself into world literature. A fairytale kingdom without Andersen would be very impoverished itself and would have to do without characters such as the Snow Queen, the Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina or the Little Match Girl, but also many previously inanimate items which Andersen brought to life: silver shillings and darning needles, and especially his Steadfast Tin Soldier.
The Grimms’ and Andersen’s tales have inspired generations of artists, and each fairy tale in this volume is colorfully interpreted by a famous illustrator: legends such as Kay Nielsen (a leading exponent of the Golden Age of Illustration that ended in the 1920s), the Arts and Crafts master Walter Crane, Arthur Rackham, and the Swiss commercial artist Herbert Leupin. Alongside are silhouettes from historical publications as well as new vignettes that were made especially for this edition, which dance across the pages in an intricate shadow play. Introductory essays, on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm as reflected in art and on Andersen as the heart and soul of the modern fairy tale, complement these flights of fancy, as do the short summaries on each fairy tale and artists’ biographies.
This double-sided book contains the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm on one side and Hans Christian Andersen’s tales on the other, each with its own cover. The following fairy tales are included:
The Brothers Grimm:
The Frog Prince, The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Brave Little Tailor, Cinderella, Mother Holle, Little Red Riding Hood, The Bremen Town Musicians, The Shoemaker and the Elves, Tom Thumb’s Travels, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, The Three Feathers, The Golden Goose, The Goose Girl, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Star Coins, The Hare and the Hedgehog, Puss ’n Boots
Hans Christian Andersen:
The Princess and the Pea, The Nightingale, The Swineherd, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Twelve by Mail Coach, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen, Ole Shut-Eye, The Ugly Duckling, Little Ida’s Flowers, The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep, The Flying Trunk, The Little Match Girl, The Tinderbox

The Improvisatore: A Novel of Italy
A semi-autobiographical novel inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s travels in Italy—and one of the author’s best-known works in his native Denmark
Published to great acclaim in 1835, Hans Christian Andersen’s debut novel, The Improvisatore, initially eclipsed his fairy tales, which first appeared in the same year. Andersen, the captivating teller of enchanted tales, is very much in evidence in this classic Bildungsroman inspired by his travels in Italy earlier in the decade. The novel’s hero, Antonio—much like Andersen himself—rises from impoverished beginnings to become a successful artist, at every turn learning charming and often alarming lessons in the ways of the world.
Adopted by a nobleman, smitten with an opera singer, challenged to a duel, captured by bandits, beset by a temptress, Antonio follows a dizzying itinerary on his path to enlightenment and, perhaps, happiness. Along the way he experiences the delights of Italian culture and nature so clearly and deeply absorbed by his peripatetic author—from the inescapable power of some of the world’s most enduring paintings and sculptures to the drama of an erupting Mount Vesuvius and the rampages of wild buffalo on the Roman campagna, all in the shadow of classical mythology and in the company of characters from every level of Italian society: beggar, brigand, priest, and poet.
This first English translation since the 1840s captures the brilliance and brio, the sweep and the nuance that made The Improvisatore one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most widely read and best loved works.

My Fairy-Tale Life (Dark Masters)
Hans Christian Andersen had every right to think of his life as a fairy tale. He came from the lowest strata of society in the then little provincial town of Odense, went to Copenhagen at the age of 14, made his own way there and rose to the highest levels of European society as the friend of kings and princes.
In his autobiography, the story of his "fairy-tale life", he gives a vivid account of the Danish provincial life he knew as a child, of life in Danish aristocratic circles and in European high society. He met all the leading authors and composers of his time and was one of the most widely travelled writers of his day. His travels took him as far east as Constantinople, and as far north as Loch Lomond, and his account of all this includes sketches of many of the leading figures of 19th-century Europe.
Today he must surely be the most famous Dane of all time.

The Ice Virgin
The relationship between a daring young chamois hunter from the remote Bernese Oberland and a prosperous miller’s daughter living in the comfortable French-speaking Swiss canton of Vaud plays out a complex of themes, such as the instinctive life versus rational civilization and the role of early experience in shaping personal destiny, in this dark and affecting Hans Christian Andersen adult novella. In the terrifying Ice Virgin and her eerie minions, with their implacable hatred of mankind, we get a glimpse of the fairy tale Andersen. But The Ice Virgin, the most disturbing, ambitious, and searching of all of Andersen’s narratives, is also a thoroughly absorbing story of the real world. Andersen here is writing about a world he saw as something of a paradigm of the human condition, and this lies behind the story’s multilayered complexity. This splendid new translation by Paul Binding and his erudite and comprehensive afterword together make a compelling case for just why The Ice Virgin deserves to be placed in the first rank of world literature.
