Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Promo (Puffin Classics)

by Lewis Carroll

Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop.'. So many readers were to take the advice of the King of Hearts that by the end of the nineteenth century Alice had acquired a pre-eminent and unassailable position in children's literature. Lewis Carroll's use of logic, by which the ordinary is translated into the extraordinary in an entirely plausible way, is delightfully combined with an exceptional knowledge and understanding of the mind of the child. Satire, allusion, and symbolism weave deeper and mysterious meanings, lending a measure of immortality to Carroll's remarkable fantasy.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Dover Thrift Editions: Classic Novels)

by Lewis Carroll

One of the English language's most popular and frequently quoted books, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was the creation of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), a distinguished scholar and mathematician who wrote under the pseudonym of Lewis Carroll. Intended for young readers but enjoyed equally by adults, the fantastic tale transformed children's literature, liberating it from didactic constraints.
The story is deeply but gently satiric, enlivened with an imaginative plot and brilliant use of nonsense. As Alice explores a bizarre underground world, she encounters a cast of strange characters and fanciful beasts: the White Rabbit, March Hare, and Mad Hatter; the sleepy Dormouse and grinning Cheshire Cat; the Mock Turtle, the dreadful Queen of Hearts, and a host of other extraordinary personalities. This edition features Sir John Tenniel's complete original illustrations, bringing to life a beloved classic that has delighted readers and listeners since its first publication in 1865.

Jabberwocky and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions: Poetry)

by Lewis Carroll

Mathematician, author, photographer, and artist, Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832–1898) is best known as the creator of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, but he was also a prolific poet. Over the course of almost 50 years, he created 150 poems, including nonsense verse, parodies, burlesques, acrostics, inscriptions, and more, many of them hilarious lampoons of some of the more sentimental and moralistic poems of the Victorian era.
This carefully chosen collection contains 38 of Carroll's most appealing verses, including such classics as "The Walrus and the Carpenter," "The Mock Turtle's Song," and "Father William," plus such lesser-known gems as "My Fancy," "A Sea Dirge," "Brother and Sister," "Hiawatha's Photographing," "The Mad Gardener's Song," "What Tottles Meant," "Poeta Fit, non Nascitur," "The Little Man That Had a Little Gun," and many others.
Filled with Carroll's special brand of imaginative whimsy and clever wordplay, this original anthology will delight fans of the author as well as other readers who relish a little laughter with their lyrics.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass (Bantam Classics)

by Lewis Carroll

In 1862 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a shy Oxford mathematician with a stammer, created a story about a little girl tumbling down a rabbit hole. Thus began the immortal adventures of Alice, perhaps the most popular heroine in English literature.

Countless scholars have tried to define the charm of the Alice books—with those wonderfully eccentric characters the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, the Mad Hatter et al.—by proclaiming that they really comprise a satire on language, a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children’s literature, even a reflection of contemporary ecclesiastical history.

Perhaps, as Dodgson might have said, Alice is no more than a dream, a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up—or down, or all turned round—as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

Alice Through the Looking-Glass

by Lewis Carroll

Why, sometimes I ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast. When Alice steps through the looking-glass in the drawing room one snowy, drowsy afternoon, she finds herself in a peculiar, topsy-turvy world where chess pieces walk about, flowers talk and nothing is quite as it seems. Alice is caught up in a bizarre chess game and encounters some rather eccentric characters, both new and familiar including the argumentative Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Humpty Dumpty, the Lion and the Unicorn, the nonsensical White Queen and the quick-tempered Red Queen. The story features the poems, The Walrus and the Carpenter and Jabberwocky , which have become just as well known as Alice s adventures themselves. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll s first Alice book, the award-winning illustrator Robert Ingpen has illustrated its enchanting sequel in this sumptuous volume. Full of anarchic humour, witty rhymes and sparkling word play, it will delight new readers and devoted fans.

Anderson's Alice: Walter Anderson Illustrates Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

by Lewis Carroll

Among Walter Anderson's best-loved books, An Alphabet and Robinson: The Pleasant History of an Unusual Cat are much admired by children and parents, and have long been given as special gifts emblazoned with Anderson's unique art. In that vein and long in demand is this revived edition of Anderson’s Alice, which carries the renowned artist's visual translation of Lewis Carroll's classic story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Anderson's Alice, though, is no Victorian doll as she is in the famous illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, Arthur Rackham, and elsewhere. Instead, Anderson represents Alice as an adventurer, capturing her spirit and her energy in bold lines. In Anderson's Alice: Walter Anderson Illustrates “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” ninety-two pen-and-ink drawings accompany the complete text of Lewis Carroll's original narrative. Anderson (1903–1965) drew them alone late at night as he recovered from an illness, and he considered them to be translations of words into visual images rather than illustrations. The story of Alice brought him comfort and inspiration, and he placed her wonderland close to his own homeland by localizing Alice's environment with backgrounds featuring the kinds of wildflowers and crabs that are native to the Gulf Coast.

Walter Anderson, often intensely private within his community of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, observed and wrote about nature and produced thousands of drawings and watercolors of the plant and animal life on the Mississippi Coast. These show his strangely beautiful style and a rich and unchecked imagination. With these artistic gifts, Anderson infuses new life into Lewis Carroll's well-loved characters, who have delighted generations of children and adults.

Alicia en el país de las maravillas (Spanish Edition)

by Lewis Carroll

The Annotated Alice: 150th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (The Annotated Books)

by Lewis Carroll

A richly illustrated and expanded collector’s edition of Martin Gardner’s The Annotated Alice, including Through the Looking-Glass, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
One summer afternoon in 1862, the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson took a rowboat out on the Thames. With him were three young friends from the Liddell family―the sisters Lorina, Edith, and Alice. Dodgson often spun fairy tales on these boating trips to pass the time, and on this particular afternoon the story was particularly well received by Alice, who afterwards entreated him to write it down for her. Dodgson recalled the pivotal moment thusly: "In a desperate attempt to strike out some new line of fairy-lore, I had sent my heroine straight down a rabbit-hole, to begin with, without the least idea what was to happen afterwards."
The tale, initially titled Alice's Adventures Under Ground, became Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which Dodgson published in 1865 as Lewis Carroll. So began the journey, now in its 150th year, of one of the most beloved stories of all time.
The Annotated Alice: 150th Anniversary Deluxe Edition compiles over half a century of scholarship by leading Carrollian experts to reveal the history and full depth of the Alice books and their enigmatic creator. This volume brings together Martin Gardner’s legendary original 1960 publication, The Annotated Alice; his follow-ups, More Annotated Alice and the Definitive Edition; his continuing explication through the Knight Letter magazine; and masterly additions and updates edited by Mark Burstein, president emeritus of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America. In these pages Lewis Carroll's mathematical riddles and curious wordplay, ingeniously embedded throughout the Alice works, are delightfully decoded and presented in the margins, along with original correspondence, amusing anecdotal detours, and fanciful illustrations by Salvador Dalí, Beatrix Potter, Ralph Steadman, and a host of other famous artists.
Put simply, this anniversary edition of The Annotated Alice is the most comprehensive collection of Alice materials ever published in a single volume. May it serve as a beautiful and enduring tribute to the charming, utterly original "new line of fairy-lore" that Lewis Carroll first spun 150 years ago.
The deluxe anniversary edition of The Annotated Alice includes: A rare, never-before-published portrait of Francis Jane Lutwidge, Lewis Carroll's mother Over 100 new or updated annotations, collected since the publication of Martin Gardner's Definitive Edition of The Annotated Alice in 1999 More than 100 new illustrations, in vibrant color, by Salvador Dalí, Beatrix Potter, Ralph Steadman, and 42 other artists and illustrators, in addition to the original artwork by Sir John Tenniel A preface by Mark Burstein, president emeritus of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and all of Gardner's introductions to other editions A filmography of every Alice-related film by Carroll scholar David Schaefer 225 color and black-and-white illustrations

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: 150th Anniversary Edition

by Lewis Carroll

A stunning anniversary edition of Alice's adventures, illustrated by Salvador Dalí

Commemorating the 150th anniversary of one of the most beloved classics of children's literature, this illustrated edition presents Alice like you’ve never seen her before.

In 1865, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an Oxford mathematician and Anglican deacon, published a story about a little girl who tumbles down a rabbit hole. Thus was the world first introduced to Alice and her pseudonymous creator, Lewis Carroll. This beautiful new edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland features rarely seen illustrations by Salvador Dalí that illuminate the surreal yet curiously logical and mathematical realm into which Alice famously falls.

In an informative and wide-ranging introduction, Carroll expert Mark Burstein discusses Dalí’s connections with Carroll, his treatment of the symbolic figure of Alice, and the mathematical nature of Wonderland. In addition, mathematician Thomas Banchoff reflects on the friendship he shared with Dalí and explores the mathematical undercurrents in Dalí’s work.

The force of social satire and fantasy in the original text of Alice in Wonderland is as relevant today as when the book was first published in 1865. In this edition, Ralph Steadman's drawings remain faithful to the book's satirical tone while revealing his own passion for irony.
This version of Carroll's classic tale is a startling departure from the traditional Victorian or Disney approaches. In his introduction, Steadman describes how a fresh illustrative perspective created an original, modern vision. The story acquires new life with his audacious and dynamic illustrations.
The 47 pen-and-ink illustrations are the same as in the critically acclaimed 1968 British edition. Reformatted and meticulously restored, they convey the energy, imagination and power of Steadman's pen and introduce the wit and wisdom of Alice to a new generation of readers.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Wisehouse Classics - Original 1865 Edition with the Complete Illustrations by Sir John Tenniel)

by Lewis Carroll

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.

Dodgson's tale was published in 1865 as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by "Lewis Carroll" with illustrations by John Tenniel. The first print run of 2,000 was held back because Tenniel objected to the print quality. A new edition was quickly printed, released in December of the same year but carrying an 1866 date.

The entire print run sold out quickly. Alice was a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike. Among its first avid readers were Queen Victoria and the young Oscar Wilde. The book has never been out of print. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into at least 174 languages. There have now been over a hundred English-language editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theatre and film.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Collins Classics)

by Lewis Carroll

Product Description

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.
‘Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversations?”’
So begins the tale of Alice, who follows a curious White Rabbit down a hole and falls into Wonderland, a fantastical place where nothing is quite as it seems: animals talk, nonsensical characters confuse, Mad Hatters throw tea parties and the Queen plays croquet. Alice’s attempts to find her way home become increasingly bizarre, infuriating and amazing in turn.
A beloved classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has continued to delight readers, young and old, for over 150 years.

Through The Looking Glass (Collins Classics)

by Lewis Carroll

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.
Alice laughed. ‘There’s no use trying,’ she said: ‘one can’t believe impossible things.’ ‘I dare say you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was your age I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’
In Carroll’s celebrated sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Alice passes through a mirror and enters a looking-glass world where order is turned upside down. From her guest appearance as a pawn in a chess match with the Red Queen to her meeting with Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Alice is greeted by nonsense characters whose poems, such as ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter’ and ‘Jabberwocky’, are as famous as Alice herself.
The subject of many film and TV adaptations, Through the Looking Glass showcases Carroll’s wit and humour, as well as his great skill at creating an imaginary world full of the fantastical and extraordinary.

The Hunting of the Snark

by Lewis Carroll

The peculiar wit and imagination of Lewis Carroll are once again in evidence in The Hunting of the Snark, his epic nonsense poem which first appeared in 1876. Unlike the earlier Alice books, this is a much darker work, in which 10 characters whose names begin with B, disappear, go mad, and generally find themselves struggling to navigate an impossible path through a nonsensical world. Throughout the poem there is a prevailing atmosphere of disorder and chaos, heightened by Carroll's characteristic use of "portmanteau" words (such as "uffish", "beamish" and "fumious") and descriptions of grotesque creatures such as the Bandersnatch and the Jubjub bird. The meaning of the poem, and of the Snark itself, has been the subject of much debate. In his preface Carroll said "In answer to your question, 'What did you mean the Snark was?' will you tell your friend that I meant that the Snark was a Boojum. I trust that she and you will now feel quite satisfied and happy." Whatever its meaning, The Hunting of the Snark remains a fascinating read. This new edition is a facsimile of the 1876 original, with reproductions of the original illustrations by Henry Holiday and is bound in red cloth with luxury gold embossing.

The Annotated Hunting of the Snark (The Annotated Books)

by Lewis Carroll

The definitive guide to one of the most baffling epics of nineteenth-century literature―a companion to The Annotated Alice. "It's a Snark!"…for whatever else can it be?" Published on April Fools' Day in 1876, Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark remains one of the most amusing and bizarre works of modern verse. Carroll, who completed this classic poem eleven years after the publication of Alice in Wonderland, invites readers along on a fictitious hunt to determine who―or what―the Snark actually is. More than 130 years later, the indomitable Martin Gardner returns to the Snark with a trove of new annotations and illustrations, uncovering some of the most confounding literary, linguistic, and mathematical references embedded in any of Lewis Carroll's many works. Included in this gorgeous, two-color volume is an introduction by Adam Gopnik, as well as Henry Holiday's distinctive, original illustrations, a substantial bibliography, and a suppressed drawing of the infamous Boojum. With a host of other Snark resources, this is the most ambitious work on Lewis Carroll's masterpiece in many decades.

Young and imaginative Alice follows a hasty rabbit underground and comes face-to-face with some of the strangest adventures and most fantastic characters in all literature....

NOW WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY ERIN MORGENSTERN, BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE STARLESS SEA AND THE NIGHT CIRCUS

The mad Hatter, the diabolical Queen of Hearts, the grinning Cheshire-Cat, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee could only have come from that master of sublime nonsense Lewis Carroll. In this brilliant satire of rigid Victorian society, Carroll also illuminates the fears, anxieties, and complexities of growing up. He was one of the few adult writers to enter successfully the children’s world of make-believe, where the impossible becomes possible, the unreal, real, and where the heights of adventure are limited only by the depths of imagination.

Alice's Adventures Under Ground The Original Manuscript

by Lewis Carroll

One "golden afternoon" in Oxford, in July 1862, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, accompanied three young sisters, Lorina, Alice, and Edith, on a boating trip. To keep the children amused, Dodgson, began to tell a tale about an inquisitive youngster called Alice, and her escapades in an underground world. Dodgson's story, later revised and illustrated by John Tenniel, would go on to become one of the most famous and best-loved children's books of all time--published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, under the pen name Lewis Carroll. However, the original tale--Alice's Adventures Under Ground--remains less well-known. In this facsimile edition of Dodgson's manuscript--now one of the British Library's most treasured possessions--with its accompanying commentary by former British Library curator Sally Brown, modern readers can enjoy the expressive story as it was first told.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There

by Lewis Carroll, Peter Hunt

The "Alice" books are two of the most translated, most quoted, and best-known books in the world. Alice's encounters with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire-Cat, the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, and many other extraordinary characters have made them beloved by children. Luxuriously illustrated with 92 watercolors, many of which are full page, with the others carefully placed with textual wraparound, this is a marvelous evocation of Carroll's madcap world. Rountree's career as an illustrator was short lived, but this, along with his Aesop's Fables, are acknowledged masterpieces. The enduring popularity of all things Alice makes this both a timely and timeless Calla publication.

The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition (The Annotated Books)

by Lewis Carroll

The culmination of a lifetime of scholarship, The Annotated Alice is a landmark event in the rich history of Lewis Carroll and cause to celebrate the remarkable career of Martin Gardner.

For over half a century, Martin Gardner has established himself as one of the world's leading authorities on Lewis Carroll. His Annotated Alice, first published in 1959, has over half a million copies in print around the world and is beloved by both families and scholars—for it was Gardner who first decoded many of the mathematical riddles and wordplay that lay ingeniously embedded in Carroll's two classic stories, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Forty years after this groundbreaking publication, Norton is proud to publish the Definitive Edition of The Annotated Alice, a work that combines the notes of Gardner's 1959 edition with his 1990 volume, More Annotated Alice, as well as additional discoveries drawn from Gardner's encyclopedic knowledge of the texts. Illustrated with John Tenniel's classic, beloved art—along with many recently discovered Tenniel pencil sketches—The Annotated Alice will be Gardner's most beautiful and enduring tribute to Carroll's masterpieces yet.

A Novel Journal: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Compact)

by Lewis Carroll

Witty, whimsical, and often nonsensical, the fiction of Lewis Carroll takes readers on a trip down the rabbit hole. Nothing sets the mood for penning a new story like the comfort of stories that have transcended time and culture. With the text of these two classics serving as the journal lines in tiny type, A Novel Journal: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is sure to spark your creativity whether you’re journaling or drafting the next classic.

Packaged with a deluxe Svepa cover, brilliant endpapers, colored edges, and matching elastic band, this book is a great gift or collectible for admirers of Carroll’s work. Alice in Wonderland: A Norton Critical Edition (Norton Critical Editions)

by Lewis Carroll

Newly discovered letters by Lewis Carroll, an expanded selection of diary excerpts, and a wealth of new biographical materials are some of the features of this revised Norton Critical Edition. This perennially popular Norton Critical Edition again reprints the 1897 editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass along with the 1876 edition of The Hunting of the Snark. Each text is fully annotated and the original illustrations are included.

An unusually rich “Backgrounds” section is arranged to correspond with three clearly defined periods in Lewis Carroll’s life. Letters and diary entries interwoven within each period emphasize the biographical dimension of Carroll’s writing. Readers gain an understanding of the author’s family and education, the evolution of the Alice books, and Carroll’s later years through his own words and through important scholarly work on his faith life and his relationships with women and with Alice Hargreaves and her family.

Reflecting the wealth of new scholarship on Alice in Wonderland and Lewis Carroll published since the last edition, Donald Gray has chosen eleven new critical works while retaining five seminal works from the previous edition. Two early pieces―an essay by Charles Dickens and poem by Christina Rossetti―take a satirical look at children’s literature. The nine new recent essays are by James R. Kincaid, Marah Gubar, Robert M. Polemus, Jean-Jacques Lecercle, Gilles Deleuze, Roger Taylor, Carol Mavor, Jean Gattégno, and Helena M. Pycior.

The Selected Bibliography has been updated and expanded.
